PRESSMAN TO PRODUCE FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION OF ARCHAIA ENTERTAINMENT’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED HORROR GRAPHIC NOVEL ‘FEEDING GROUND’

ALFONSO GOMEZ-REJON (‘AMERICAN HORROR STORY’) TO DIRECT AND CARLOS COTO (’24′) TO WRITE IMMIGRATION PARABLE SET ON THE U.S./MEXICO BORDER

New York, NY (May 10, 2012) – Edward R. Pressman, producer of such classic films as Wall Street, American Psycho, The Crow, Bad Lieutenant, and Das Boot, announced today that he has optioned the feature film rights for Archaia Entertainment’s acclaimed graphic novel FEEDING GROUND. Created by Swifty Lang, Michael Lapinski, and Chris Mangun, Feeding Ground was the first full-length graphic novel to be published in hardcover simultaneously in English and Spanish. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is set to direct and screenwriter Carlos Coto will adapt for the screen.

Feeding Ground tells the story of a “coyote,” a trafficker of illegal immigrants, forced to smuggle his family into America by crossing the most forbidding part of the Arizona/Mexico border, a searing no-man’s-land known as “The Devil’s Highway.” Along the way, he and his family clash with U.S. Border Patrol agents, only to realize that the entire party is being hunted by the real monsters that roam the countryside—werewolves.

“Feeding Ground is an intense and terrifying thriller with a subtle but pointed commentary on immigration in modern America,” said Pressman. “The graphic novel is so cinematic in nature—as soon as I read it, I knew we could make a film that would resonate with a wide audience. Alfonso and Carlos are the perfect talents to bring this vision to the big screen.”

Born and raised in Laredo, Texas on the US/Mexico border, Alfonso began his career as personal assistant to Martin Scorsese, Nora Ephron, Robert De Niro and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu. He became a sought-after 2nd Unit director (Babel, State of Play, The Eagle, Eat Pray Love, Argo) before directing critically acclaimed episodes of Glee (“Asian F”) and American Horror Story (“Birth”), as well as numerous national commercials. He also conceived and wrote Chanel’s worldwide “Bleu de Chanel” campaign directed by Scorsese. Carlos Coto is currently a writer and co-executive producer of Nikita. He has previously written and produced for 24, Heroes, Journeyman, The Dead Zone, NCIS, and was a consultant on the Emmy-winning HBO film, For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.

Pressman is currently in development of a reinvention of the 1994 hit film The Crow to be written by Jesse Wigutow (The Osterman Weekend) and directed by Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) with Relativity, a reinvention of the iconic action film Bloodsport written by Robert Kamen (Taken) and to be directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt), and The Monkey Wrench Gang to be written and directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman (Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3). The latest feature from Pressman, The Moth Diaries, written and directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho) was recently released by IFC Films and is available in theaters and through VOD.

Pressman Film COO Jon Katz and Archaia’s Stephen Christy and PJ Bickett will serve as Executive Producers along with Jason Carpenter, a former Pressman staffer, who brought the property to Pressman. Stephen Cavaliero is a Co-Producer.

Katz negotiated the deals on behalf of Pressman Film. CAA and Aaron Baumel of Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder LLP represented Archaia. CAA and Corinne Farley of Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein & Kohner represented Coto. WME and Christine S. Cuddy of Kleinberg, Lange, Cuddy & Klein LLP represented Gomez-Rejon.

The folks at FreeComicBookDay.com didn’t have the opportunity to run this Free Comic Book Day interview with Dapper Men artist Janet K. Lee, and we didn’t want it go to waste, so we thought we’d run it here!

FCBD: Set your project up for those that might be new to your comic book. What can we expect to see in terms of story and art?

JANET K. LEE: Jim and I created a story which takes place *around* the events in Return of the Dapper Men, introducing a new character who will be very, very important for our upcoming Time of the Dapper Men. The guys at Archaia tell me that artistically, my Dapper Men have grown up. The pages are done in decoupage again, but I think the past year working on Emma and Northanger Abbey for Marvel have added a bit more sophistication to my style. I’ve certainly refined my approach to layouts and backgrounds– which I hope everyone enjoys as much as I do!

FCBD: What has been your favorite part of book or character to tackle?

LEE: Time of the Dapper Men is broader in scope than Return. Return was, for me, a fairy tale; Time is a quest, and adventure! And with the quest, our hero Ayden gets to travel. Previously, our story was limited to only the city of Anorev, but Time takes us around the entire world! That means I get to design new cities, new civilizations, killer robot animals! I love that!

FCBD: Tell our readers why they should pick your book first on FCBD.

LEE: Archaia has completely raised the bar this year; they are giving away a gorgeous, hardcover anthology which is chock-full of stories I love to read. The few times I haven’t been waiting in line at my own LCS on FCBD for the doors to open, I’ve missed out on the book from Archaia. This year it’s going to be worse. Who ISN’T rushing to the store to pick up this book?

Page 1 of "Steps of the Dapper Men" in the FCBD Hardcover

FCBD: What’s your favorite part about being able to work in comics?

LEE: You know, every day I get to wake up and spend the day drawing is an excellent day. But the best, best days are the days I get to meet other people who love comics as much as I do. That’s really my favorite part.

FCBD: Many newcomers will be picking up comics for the first time on FCBD—what was the first comic you remember reading?

LEE: The first comic I remember reading was a paperback collection of Heathcliff comics—you know, the tough cat who beat up everybody? I was maybe five years old and my best friend lived next door to a novelty salesman. He would give us Archie, Heathcliff, and Dennis the Menace comics—as well as amazing stuff like wax lips and tiny, shaped pencil erasers.

FCBD: Where will you be for this year’s FCBD? Do you have any annual FCBD traditions?

LEE: This year I will be signing at Ultimate Comics in Chapel Hill-Durham, NC and I’m thrilled to be part of their event! I’ll be there with Chris Burnham, Joe KeatingE, Andre Szymanowicz, and Tommy Lee Edwards, and Brian Clevinger, so I expect LOTS of folks to join us.

I think I’ll be adding a new FCBD tradition this year and go to see Avengers Friday night. I’m hearing great things about the movie.

FCBD: Looking to the future of the book, is there anything you can tease about what’s coming?

LEE: You know, I am extremely proud of Return of the Dapper Men—I love the work that Jim and I did there‚but I have to say, I think I love Time of the Dapper Men even more. Jim’s storytelling just gets better and better and the scope of the tale is so wonderfully lush. Look for an announcement about the release date soon. I couldn’t be more excited!

Feature-Quality Animation Heralds Release of Alex Alice’s Epic Graphic Novel ‘Siegfried’

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 4th, 2012) – Eisner Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment is proud to announce the online premiere of the English-language trailer for their upcoming release of Alex Alice’s SIEGFRIED, the first volume in an epic trilogy of graphic novels inspired by the Richard Wagner operatic cycle, “The Ring of the Nibelung.”

Based on the medieval Germanic mythology of the Nibelungenlied, SIEGFRIED tells the story of a child discovered in the woods by a dwarf-goblin who raises the boy in protective secrecy. As he grows older, however, the boy discovers that he is more than just a lost orphan—he has a destiny planned by Odin, the father of the Norse gods, to fight the dragon Fafnir, guardian of the forbidden Rheingold. This beloved tale of high fantasy and epic heroic discovery is known to have inspired countless well-known classics, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

To introduce the series to a North American audience, Archaia has released a feature-quality animated trailer created by Pendragon Imageforge and directed by series author and artist Alex Alice. Originally created as a stylistic proof-of-concept for an animated feature film, plans for the full production are set to resume now that Alice has completed the trilogy of graphic novels.

The trailer can be found on Archaia’s YouTube Channel here:

Volume 1 of the SIEGFRIED graphic novel will release in June, with the second and third volumes to follow in 2013.
