The Killer feels like a 1970s action movie, and I mean that as a huge compliment. Even if you weren’t alive in the 1970s or (like me) too young to have seen them in the theater, thanks to the videotape and then DVD market, you’ve probably seen some of them: Three Days of the Condor, The Parallax View, The Day of the Jackal, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The French Connection, stuff like that. They all have a certain feel to them that earlier and later movies don’t – I often wonder if it’s the level of technology.

Some of the changes to comic book publishing are obvious since Hollywood started salivating over their wares.

Some of the changes to comic book publishing are obvious since Hollywood started salivating over their wares. But a lot of changes influenced by the film industry have happened without most loyal comic book fans even realizing it.

The biggest and most apparent shifts within the world of publishing have happened just in the last year. DC Comics is now calling itself “DC Entertainment,” reporting directly to Warner Bros. Pictures Group. Marvel now runs its own movie studio under the umbrella of Disney’s entertainment conglomerate. And comic book’s top writers, like Brian Michael Bendis and Geoff Johns, spend much of their time nowadays consulting on scripts for movie projects and TV shows.

But other changes to the comic book industry have trickled down to even smaller publishers in ways that are less noticeable to readers, but all-too-apparent within the industry.

Not long ago The Engineer was sent over to us for review by our friends at Archaia Press. Read on for the NC Review!

Sadly among the dozens of things going on around here it took me awhile to find the time to read it, (If you can believe it, I was apologizing to Tom Brevoort the other day for just reading Siege #2 last week!). But as soon as I started this book I immediately regretted waiting so long to make time for it.

Today we bring you a special edition of Multiversity Comics Presents. While this is not the first time we have spoken to Mouse Guard’s David Petersen, it is the first time we’ve sat down with him in person. Or any creator for that matter. Try not to be distracted by the goings on behind David and myself. We were filming in a hotel and apparently at a busy time, but still, it was a good time.

We here at Secret Identity have long been fans of Archaia, having met some of the great people there a few years ago at the Kids’ Comic Con. 2009 was an interesting year for the company, as Archaia went through some restructuring on the administrative side, which included a break from publishing for a few months. When things ramped back up in June of last year, Archaia emerged with a strong team and a publishing strategy that included a healthy mix of single issue comics, double-sized collected editions and graphic novels.

Archaia has long been a favorite graphic novel publisher. Now they’ve come out with Days Missing, based on an idea by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and fleshed out by the likes of Ian Edginton. The idea, that a mysterious entity has been interfering with history at various points, usually to save humankind’s collective ass, is presented in a series of short pieces, each in a different style and different era.

If you’ve ever had a chance to watch Fraggle Rock, you should be on the edge of your seat waiting for the Archaia Comics release. When I heard the issue was coming, I started asking for any information we could get on it. I hadn’t watched the show when it was on but I have with my daughter since the episodes were released on DVD. Fraggle Rock #1 (which is available for order by retailers) will contain a main feature along with a couple back up tales. I had the chance to ask Heather White (writer of the main story) and Jeff Stokely (artist of the main feature) some questions.
